NEW DELHI, July 13: Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali on Thursday said the BIMSTEC nations stand to gain immensely by sharing their experience in the health sector.

“Health care facility is one of the areas where we need mutual and renewed efforts to shine as a region,” he said at the inauguration of JIPMER-BIMSTEC Telemedicine Network (JBTN) at Pondicherry. JIPMER stands for Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research.

The Bangladesh envoy welcomed JBTN’s goals of sharing knowledge through tele-lectures, quality control in surgery by sharing operative videos, use of tele-consulation in medical treatment and promoting mobile health programmes in BIMSTEC countries.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University of Bangladesh as a partner with the initiative, he noted with satisfaction.

Indian State Minister for Health Faggan Singh Kulasate presided over the meeting.    Representatives of BIMSTEC countries attended.

Syed Muazzem Ali said Bangladesh stands ready to share its experience in the health sector.

“Despite limited resources, Bangladesh has made commendable progress in achieving the health related MDGs such as life expectancy, total fertility rate, infant and under-5 mortality rate etc and is on right track to achieve the health related SDGs also,” he said.

Referring to the success of Dhaka-based International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) combating the water borne diseases he said “We need to share our common experiences and share the best practices about combating the epidemics.” 

He also underlined the need for joint collaboration with the South-east Asia region.
